He studied at the Brooklyn Museum School in Brooklyn, New York and MFA Otis Art Institute (now Otis College of Art and Design) in Los Angeles, California. Edwards was a student of Peter Voulkos at Otis.
He also studied under Marguerite Wildenhain and Soji Hamada. Edwards is known for producing table top and monumental functional and decorative, reduction fired stoneware and porcelain pottery. He has formed techniques that include slab built, hand built, and wheel thrown art. Edward's surface techniques include sgraffito, brush work and, on monumental works, stylized abstract sprigs or mat appliqué.
These techniques were inspired by Japanese Sumi and Abstract Expressionist painters. Edwards felt his greatest accomplishments were maintaining quality ware as a production potter and supporting himself and his wife as a professional ceramicist.
