This 1930's Catalin / (some refer to it as Bakelite) barometer is in unrestored, untouched condition, as is, as found. What this means is that the original patina of 80+ years is still on this barometer.

"Catalin", the correct name of the phenolic resin this is made of this same material was made by Bakelite corporation, Monsanto, general Electric, etc. Many years ago was and is referred to as'The Gem of plastics'. Old FORTUNE magazines from the 1930's picture these beautiful items, sometimes in a full page advertisement. They make great companion displays next to your Catalin collections. This barometer is missing its front glass, or plastic cover (they made them both ways), but you can order replacement clock glass online for a few dollars, and replace it yourself.

The original color of this barometer was an incredible sky blue, sometmes light green on top, with a milky white base. The top has'mutated' to a brown color (you can still see the swirls or'marbling' in this), and the base has become a deep pumpkin color. If you spend a little time with some Novus polish, you can bring it all back to original, but some collectors prefer to leave these as-is, to show the years of'patina' that has taken place. They're beautiful both ways. In fact, you can just lightly polish this, and the base will positively glow like amber, and the top will show the swirling (marbling), without taking it all back down to original.

One tiny flea bite you will have to search to find is on the bottom of the base, bottom back corner. Not noticeable, but mentioned for accuracy. The chrome ring should shine up nicely if polished gently, or you can bring it to full brilliant brass, again, the choice is yours. The barometer face is in excellent condition, not cracked or pitted as so many you see online. Measures approximately 5 inches wide, 4 inches tall, 1&1/4 inches deep.

The barometer itself can be adjusted by simply turning the back plate, as indicated, but I don't think it's working properly, as it doesn't change much. A little time spent polishing, and a new front glass cover, and you'll have a beautiful piece of 20th century art deco to display.
